Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Shear Operator to join our team! This role involves safely operating a power shear to cut metal sheets and plates according to specifications, while ensuring quality, efficiency, and a safe work environment.
Responsibilities:
- Obtain order instructions from the supervisor.
- Understand production procedures and interpret work order instructions.
- Safely set up and operate the shear.
- Adjust setup based on material size and angles.
- Communicate immediately if questions or problems arise.
- Instruct and assist the shear helper to maintain smooth operation.
- Follow the check system and accurately complete production reports.
- Measure and verify material counts and quality throughout the process.
- Ensure setups are signed off by lead shear operator or backup.
- Properly tag, package, and return excess inventory to stock.
- Monitor equipment for problems; shut down and report issues immediately.
- Perform routine maintenance and coordinate preventive maintenance with the maintenance team.
- Keep work area clean and safe.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Reliable and consistent attendance.
- Ability to use measuring tape, micrometer, caliper, and Rockwell hardness tester.
- Basic Excel skills for data entry and information searches.
- Ability to calculate steel weights using formulas.
- Distinguish steel types, sizes, thickness, and defects.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and operate a pendant crane.
- Knowledge of quality control: size tolerance, steel type, surface defects, burrs, camber, and shape.
- Manufacturing: 5 years required
- Steel Industry: 2 years required
